Apples & Bears (2020)

Apples & Bears (2020) is a 5-song collection of lullabies made for my (first) niece. living on opposite coasts, i wanted a way for her to know my voice in hopes that on our first visit and beyond, there would be a bond of familiarity between us already. in these songs, i played with harmonies and delicate repetition, two things that help lull me to a place of contentedness and rest.

the title comes from the painting upon which the prayer from the final track was written: a brown teddy bear sat next to a basket full of red apples. growing up, my sisters and i would say “amen. apples and bears, amen. two amens.” at the end of the prayer. a perfect title for a group of lullabies. this record was written and produced in my bedroom during the month of march 2020. my first niece, morgan, was born on the 1st of april 2020.

an updated thought as i edit my website in 2025: i now have 3 nieces, a nephew and many more tiny kin who've fallen asleep to these songs. it's a touching thing to feel like i've been a comforting voice to family and friends when i live so far away. also, this collection of songs is easily my most streamed on the internet. i try not to place importance on numbers but when songs like Time For Bed are used in videos of strangers laying their kids (and sometimes their dogs) down to sleep for the night, i just think that's really nice. i find it funny because i made no effort to share this record when deciding to release it. it just founds its way to folks. we all love sleep, i guess.

anyway, thanks.. for... *yawn*.... listening.
